Finding an enchanting, immersive dance class in Richmond for your child can be life changing. Once your little one gets involved in a great class at a great studio, you’ll be amazed at how quickly they fall in love with the art of dancing. At Reign Dance Project, our Storybook Ballet is a new and improved version of baby ballet class. We use a multifaceted approach to learning that keeps kids engaged and excited to be there.
The Inspiration Behind Storybook Ballet
Our owner and director, Miss Nicole, has a background in education. She was an elementary school teacher in Chesterfield County Public Schools for over five years before she left the classroom to pursue her dream of opening her own studio. While developing class offerings, the goal was to have an option for little ones that incorporated some educational components that would keep their minds just as active as their bodies.
Storybook Ballet is about making books come to life in a way that resonates with kids on multiple levels, sparking their imagination and connecting them with dance in a new way.
The Benefits of Storybook Ballet
The combination of reading and dance offers numerous benefits. Children develop better literacy skills if they can connect words with actions and emotions. The physical activity of ballet improves their coordination, balance, and overall physical health, while the stories themselves improve cognitive skills and promote social-emotional learning.
Additionally, the class fosters a sense of community and teamwork as children learn to move together and support one another in performances. It’s also a great tool for preparing for school once the time comes.
Class Procedures
First, we always start with some warm up. Fun games and instruction songs (think Hands, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes-type songs) get everyone moving and focused. Next, we start our book! We work through stories in three-week increments to give everyone time to learn the steps and combinations in bite-size pieces that are easy to understand.
During each of those three weeks, we’ll do choreography based on the story and eventually, we’ll have a whole dance to tell a story! Little ones love the concept of following their favorite princess stories and fairytales, and adding movement to reading comprehension helps them understand and remember.
